AUSTIN — The Young Conservatives of Texas (YCT) today announced their endorsement of Rep. Charles Schwertner for Texas Senate in SD 5. Senator Ogden, who currently holds the seat, has announced that he is retiring.

“Representative Schwertner had a great first session in the Texas House and we are excited that he will be bringing his strong, principled leadership to the Texas Senate,” said Tony McDonald, YCT Senior Vice Chairman.  “As the state deals with the consequences of federal overreach into the healthcare industry, Schwertner’s experience and leadership as a doctor and as a principled conservative will be invaluable in ensuring that our state government doesn’t overstep its bounds.”

Dr. Schwertner currently serves in the Texas House as the representative from District 20. He and his wife Belinda, along with their three sons, are residents of Georgetown. He is a local orthopedic surgeon and small business owner with medical practices in both Georgetown and Round Rock.

“Based on Representative Schwertner’s performance during the past Legislative session, I am confident that he will provide a much needed conservative voice in the Texas Senate,” said Jeff Morris, YCT State Chairman. “The voters of SD 5 need a principled conservative who will stand up against big government and I firmly believe Schwertner will more than fill that void.”

“I am honored that this group of young conservative leaders has chosen to stand with me in this election,” said Schwertner. “The Young Conservatives of Texas represent the future of our party, and I look forward to continuing to work together to protect our Constitution, defend our individual freedoms, and promote the free market principles that will grow our economy, create jobs, and prepare Texas for a bright future.”

Young Conservatives of Texas (YCT) has been promoting conservatism at universities across the Lone Star State for over three decades. The state’s most active political youth organization, YCT is composed of hundreds of members and alumni who participate in the full spectrum of politics. YCT issues the most respected ratings of the Texas legislature and is the only conservative group to have done so without interruption over the past 19 legislative sessions.
