Senator Cornyn’s Reaction to Yesterday’s Supreme Court Ruling on Detainees

Blog / June 13, 2008

The Supreme Court ruled yesterday that:

"…prisoners at the Guantanamo military base have a right to challenge their detention in US civilian courts, dealing a stiff rebuke to the Bush administration."

"John McCain weighed in on the U.S. Supreme Court decision on the rights of Guantanamo Bay prisoners to challenge their detention in U.S. courts at a town hall meeting Friday, calling the 5-4 decision “one of the worst decisions in the history of this country.”

Senator Cornyn says he believes the ruling was a mistake.  He believes the dissents of Scalia and Roberts were right.

"We want to stop them before they kill thousands of people," says Cornyn.

Congress can still review the ruling.

"What it means now is that we have to come back to Congress," he finishes.

He closed out the interview by saying that the election of Barrack Obama would be disastrous and that he would nominate the wrong kind of judges.
