Texas High School Named After Fallen Marine

YCT Commends Leander School District

The Young Conservatives of Texas would like to commend the Leander, Texas Independent School District for naming a local high school after a brave hometown fallen marine, Lieutenant Matthew Vandegrift.

Lt. Vandegrift graduated from Leander High School in 1999 as a star athlete and with prestigious academic honors.

Upon graduating from Leander High School, Lt. Vandegrift graduated from Texas A&M University with honors and a degree in international business before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in August of 2005.

"The Lieutenant Matthew Vandegrift High School pays tribute to Leander’s hometown hero and to all the courageous men and women who put their lives on the line to fight for our everyday freedoms," said Laura Elizabeth Morales, Young Conservatives of Texas Director of Public Relations.

Lt. Vandegrift was killed in Iraq on April 1, 2008, just four days short of his 28th birthday.

"This high school is symbolic of all the great achievements any high schooler can accomplish, whether its serving your country and defending freedom or graduating as a star athlete with honors like Leander’s own Lt. Vandegrift did," continued Morales.

The Young Conservatives of Texas applaud the Leander Independent School District’s choice to honor a hero of our nation by naming a school in their town the Lt. Matthew Vandegrift High School.
