Austin, TX—Young Conservatives of Texas (YCT) today announced its endorsement of Rep. Kelly Hancock in Texas Senate District 9. Hancock, a proven champion for conservative values, is facing Todd Smith in the Republican Primary. Smith has built his campaign upon a call to increase the State gas tax. In the past he has supported raiding the State’s Rainy Day Fund to increase spending.

“There are few primary elections in the State that present such a clear choice for voters. Hancock opposes increasing the gas tax. Smith wants to raise it. Kelly Hancock is one of the most conservative Republicans in the House; Todd Smith is one of the most liberal. This was an easy endorsement for Young Conservatives of Texas to make, and we expect it to be an easy decision for voters as well,” said Tony McDonald, YCT Senior Vice Chairman.

Smith performed in the bottom 10% of Republicans in the Texas House, earning a 61 on YCT’s ratings of the 82nd Texas Legislature. On two occasions he sided with the Democrats to support raiding the state’s economic stabilization fund to encourage increased government spending.

“Young Conservatives of Texas and I agree that low taxes and regulations are critical to our State’s future success. Senate District 9 voters want a leader who will represent these conservative views in Austin. I am honored to have the support and endorsement of YCT, an outstanding organization in the fight for conservatism,” Rep. Hancock said.

Hancock, who has been recognized as a conservative leader in the House since his election as State Representative in 2006, is Chairman of the Republican Caucus Policy Committee. Hancock is a successful small businessman. Kelly and his wife, Robin, have been married 25 years and have three children.

Young Conservatives of Texas (YCT) has been promoting conservatism at universities across the Lone Star State for over three decades. The state’s most active political youth organization, YCT is composed of hundreds of members and alumni who participate in the full spectrum of politics. YCT issues the most respected ratings of the Texas legislature and is the only conservative group to have done so without interruption over the past 19 legislative sessions.
