Austin, TX — Young Conservatives of Texas (YCT) congratulated Representative David Simpson of Longview for earning the Rookie of the Year in their ratings of the 82nd Texas Legislature with a session score of 91.

“YCT is especially pleased to announce that David Simpson earned the highest score of all the freshmen on our ratings for this session,” said Jeff Morris, YCT Vice Chairman.

YCT released their ratings of the 82nd Texas Legislature earlier this month. These ratings make up the 19th installment of the group’s ratings of the legislature, a public service the organization has performed since 1975.

“I am grateful to receive the Rookie of the Year award from Young Conservatives of Texas. For YCT, it isn’t enough to call yourself ‘conservative’ — you have to back up your words with actions. The voters of the district that I serve sent me to Austin to do what’s right and not to ‘just play along,’” Representative Simpson said. “By God’s grace I did my best to honor their trust.”

On top of earning YCT’s Rookie of the Year for the Texas House, Simpson also ranked among the most conservative members of the legislature on the organization’s Honor Roll for the session.

“In the 36 years that YCT has been producing our legislative ratings, they have grown to be the most thorough, trusted, and respected ratings of the Texas Legislature,” stated Tony McDonald, YCT Senior Vice Chairman. “We are very proud of Representative Simpson for his commitment to conservative principles and policy during his rookie session.”

YCT’s ratings are prepared by conservative students, volunteering their time to comb through thousands of pages of legislative journals to locate votes that highlight conservative public policy choices. Scorecards are then built showing how each member of the legislature voted on the measure and scores are calculated based on whether the member voted in accordance with the conservative position of limited government and individual freedom.

Young Conservatives of Texas has been promoting conservatism at universities across the Lone Star State for over three decades. The state’s most active political youth organization, YCT is composed of hundreds of members and alumni who participate in the full spectrum of politics. YCT issues the most respected ratings of the Texas legislature and is the only conservative group to have done so without interruption over the past 19 legislative sessions.
